Fencing Footwork

Fencing footwork

In a fencing bout, a great deal depends on being in the right place at the right time. Fencers are constantly manoeuvring in and out of each other's range, accelerating, decelerating and changing directions.

The fencing stance and movements have evolved over centuries  so a fencer is always in a well balanced position and is able to use leg muscles to generate rapid bursts of speed and change directions with comparative ease.

Footwork practice is a great muscular and aerobic exercise that helps the athletes to build great endurance, explosive speed, and flexibility.
